I still remember the day I got married. The amazing dress, the killer shoes, the feeling that this was truly the best day of my life. I also remember the lack lustre knickers I was wearing – hardly the best bridal lingerie.
I had a boned corseted dress you see. So even with my larger than average boobage, I was supported enough on my top half not to need a bra (one of the many reasons why I love a corset). As for bridal panties – I just hadn’t given it a thought. When it comes to your wedding day there are so many other things that come higher up the priority list than what lies underneath. After all, it’s only you, your newlywed (and let’s face it probably a bridesmaid or two) that will see.
I wish I had given it a thought. I wish I had prepared. Just spending a little time to shop around would have turned that feeling of ‘oh crikey’ into ‘oooh baby’ on the wedding night. So, to stop you making the same mistake, I have come up with a list of 10 steps you should follow to ensure you have the perfect bridal lingerie for your big day…
If you’ve read any of my lingerie blogs before, you’ll know how often I say, “size matters”. It’s time to be honest with yourself and your size. Trying to hide lumps and bumps when really a size up could have worked wonders is no fun on your wedding day. Whether small or large, there is so much choice out there – there is really no reason to squeeze yourself into something just because you think numbers matter. What matters is that you look stunning and feel comfortable and supported too.
If you’re unsure about your size, measure up. There are lots of places who offer free measuring services, without judgement. Or get a tape measure and do it yourself in the privacy of your own home. The most important thing is that you do it. For more help on how to measure your own bra size, why not check out my blog on How To Measure Your Bra Size.
If you’re still unsure, go and book a bridal fitting. There are many bridal lingerie services out there where an expert can show you the options that would work on your body, without the compulsion to buy. Why not go with your bridesmaids and make an event of it. Try on some styles, get some advice and finish with a glass or two of bubbly… Once you have their advice, you know exactly the types of styles you’re looking for and can enjoy shopping round to find your perfect outfit.
Think about what you’re used to wearing. Your wedding day is not the day to experiment with new styles for the first time. It’s a day to relax and know you’ve got it covered, not a day to pull up those hold ups you’ve dragged on, or to be uncomfortable in that corset you’ve never tried before.
If you do fancy trying something new, take the time to get to know it before the big day arrives. Perhaps wear the corset while you’re shopping or replace your regular tights for hold-ups at the office. It might not be as bad as you had thought, in which case go for it. Or, it could be an experience from hell never to be repeated, in which case – move on!
We all know that our sizes fluctuate throughout the year, and brides-to-be are more than likely to lose a few pounds before the big day anyway. There is little point buying your lingerie nice and early in order to get a job done. Wait until the last month of wedding planning, so you know that your body size isn’t going to change dramatically. You want your lingerie to fit like a glove, not to have a last minute panic when it doesn’t quite fit right.
Bridal lingerie is white yes? NO! You have so many colour variants out there and it is worth taking the time to get it right for you. Sure, us purer-than-snow, virginal brides (who are we kidding) should wear white on our big day, but it isn’t always the right choice.
If your dress is more sheer in nature; meaning it’s a delicate fabric, or you can just about make out your silhouette under the dress – white lingerie would not be your friend. Pop on a bright white panty under a dress like this and you might as well have worn it on top. It will contrast against your skin colour and show through just as much as a bright colour or black would.
Generally, ivory shades, pale hues and flesh tones are your friends when it comes to lingerie as they will not stand out as much as the bright colours will (and yes that includes white). There is so much to choose from, you won’t be disappointed.
If, however your dress is thicker in material, or has many layers – you have a lot of lingerie freedom. Colour options are limitless so enjoy playing with the bright whites, or a little bit of ‘something blue’.
What style is your bridal outfit? Is it large and lustrous or sleek and simple? Your lingerie should be a seamless integration to support your outfit versus something that spoils the line of the dress or sticks out like a sore thumb.
If your dress is smooth with delicate material, consider control wear lingerie or seamless styles to protect the shape and line. Similarly, avoid lace and textured garments as they will show through and break the softness of the material. You would hate it if you looked back at your wedding photos and all you could see were two lacey boobs and a VPL, so take the time to get it right.
Just like with your silhouette, you need to consider the style of the dress to decide what style of lingerie you choose. There is nothing quite so unsightly as the accidental flash of bra as you say your vows.
If you’re dress is strapless, it goes without saying that strapless lingerie it must be. But similarly think about how low cut your dress is. There are half or quarter cup styles that can give you some support, whilst protecting you from the dreaded flash.
Similarly, why not try a convertible bra that is designed for strapless or backless dresses. It’s a great wardrobe staple anyway but can make your day so much easier when it comes to finding a flexible garment perfect for that additional support.
With the dreaded ‘flash’ in mind, trying your lingerie together with your dress is an absolute must. If you are buying your lingerie from a store, take your dress along to the fitting. If you are buying your lingerie online, then you have the bonus of turning your home into your own personal fitting studio. So, get your gear on, stand in front of a full-length mirror (or your maid of honour) and make sure you check it out from all angles to make sure it’s just right.
Things to look out for:
Get it right and your lingerie should work flawlessly with your dress. The best bridal lingerie for you will enhance your shape and provide support whilst making you feel sexy and bride-ready.
Wedding lingerie shouldn’t just be a one-day thing, especially if you’re working to a budget. Buy lingerie that works for you, even when the confetti has blown away and the honeymoon is a distant memory. A practical choice is a perfect choice. I’m not saying don’t buy anything luxurious and special, but there is no reason why that luxurious and special item can’t be used more than once. Ask yourself, is this something I can see myself wearing again… if the answer is yes, then go, go, go.
It’s not just about the wedding service is it? Sometimes the after party is every bit as brilliant and meaningful as the service itself. There are many of us who choose to change it up on our wedding day, choosing one outfit for the service and another for the reception, at the very least we might remove a veil or tie up a train. Why not extend this to your honeymoon lingerie wardrobe?
Think about having one lingerie outfit for your wedding day, and another one for your wedding night. That way you can be all prim and proper underneath that dress, but when it comes to your ‘first night’ you can really be yourself and have a little fun in the lingerie department. From virginal bride to sex goddess… anything goes!
So, what are you waiting for? Time to get wedding planning – and don’t forget your lingerie!!
