We have the Victorians to thank for the camisoles that we know and love today. Back in the 1900s, ladies wanted a light-weight top to cover their heavily structured corsets.  So, they opted for these cami style tops that didn't add too much weight or texture to outfits.Today's camisoles emerged in the 1920s, as liberation beckoned and active women sought out clothes they could actually move in. In the present day, they are worn as lingerie, sleepwear and outer wear.  They tend to extend to the waist, but cut-off versions, showing off the midriff are also popular.
